The Vancouver Park Board is hoping Vancouverites will open up their wallets and help the city rebuild its green canopy.
It is asking city residents to buy 22 varieties of trees, at a discount.
The tree sale is part of the first ever Vancouver Tree Week that will run between April 2 and 10.
The board hopes the sale will become an annual tradition.
The goal is to plant 14,000 trees this year and a total of 150,000 new trees by 2020.
The board says Vancouver’s canopy has been in steady decline over the past two decades. Only 18 per cent of Vancouver is covered by tree canopy, which is a drop from 22 per cent in 1995.
The 3,000 trees currently on sale include figs, cherry, almond, magnolia, maple, lilac and oak.
They were selected by Park Board arborists to thrive in Vancouver’s diverse growing conditions.
Residents can buy the $10 trees now at vancouver.ca/treeweek, with a maximum of three per household.
The board says the trees are worth about $75 each and are not suitable for balconies or growing inside the home.
Residents can pick up pre-paid trees on Saturday, April 2 at Hillcrest Centre and on Sunday, April 10 at Trout Lake Community Centre.
A limited number of trees will be available for cash purchase.
