An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a house fire in Markham on Tuesday that resulted in six people being taken to hospital including a police officer.

The fire started on Tuesday afternoon at a residence on Douglas Haig Drive in the area of Steeles AVenue and McCowan Road.

Police say one man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and a woman and three children were also taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

A York Regional Police officer, who was among the first to arrive on scene, was also hospitalized for minor injuries due to smoke inhalation.

The cause of the blaze is unknown and the Ontario Fire Marshal has taken over the investigation.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area before and after the fire to come forward.
