Saskatchewan election results 2016: Sask. Party wins Cypress Hills riding

A look at Cypress Hills, one of the 61 provincial electoral districts in the 2020 Saskatchewan election.

Douglas Steele of the Sask. Party has won the Cypress Hills riding with 5,614 votes beating out the NDP’s Barb Genert who got 852 votes.

Summary: With Saskatchewan Party MLA Wayne Elhard stepping down after 16 years, voters in Cypress Hills will choose a rookie representative in 2016.

Boundaries: A large rural riding in Saskatchewan’s southwest corner, the riding is bordered by the South Saskatchewan river to the north, and roughly all ridings to the west of Swift Current.

Last Election: Elhard defeated NDP candidate Alex Mortensen by over 4200 votes, 83-13 per cent—the largest margin in the 2011 election.

History: The riding was won by Progressive Conservative MLA Jack Goohsen in 1995, but was taken by Wayne Elhard in a 1999 byelection by 1400 votes, and he has increased his margin of victory in every election since. Prior to that, most of the area was part of the old riding of Maple Creek, which was held by the PC Party from 1978 to 1995.
