EDMONTON- “We had an amazing weekend,” exclaims Wanda Bornn, the producer of the Ice on Whyte Festival. The attendance numbers are still being tallied up but Bornn says the mild weather brought thousands of people to the festival on its first weekend of 2016.
The festival is being held over two weekends in January this year. The ice sculptures are always the main allure with the festival attracting several new sculptors this year.
“We have an artist from Japan, he’s here for the very first time,” Bornn adds. “Someone from Malaysia, Lithuania and yet another Russian.”

The first weekend wraps up Sunday night with the final judging of the sculptures which will be lit up for photography buffs to capture.
The festival will go dark Monday through Wednesday and reopen on Thursday Jan. 28 and run straight through until next Sunday.
“There will be a whole bunch of new carving appearing in the park, exhibit pieces,” Bornn says. The ‘Ice Block Challenge’ will take place next weekend – an ice-carving challenge open to local artists.
Ice on Whyte ends next Saturday with a ‘Boogie Patrol’ dance party and a ‘Mardi Gras’ parade and party next Sunday.
