It’s a challenge that every student athlete faces: how to succeed in the classroom, while dedicating hours to their sport.
One group of University of Lethbridge students are clearly striking the right balance.
The school announced this week that 46 Pronghorns athletes have achieved All-Canadian academic status. In order to get to that level, student athletes must maintain an 80 per cent average.
“I’m really proud of them,” said Pronghorns Executive Director Ken McInnes. “It really does epitomize what it means to be a student athlete. They’ve achieved both at the academic side of the house and their athletic achievements, and that’s not easy to do.”
However, McInnes would like to see more of the school’s athletes get to that high academic level.
“I’d like to see us continue to increase that number,” said McInnes. “Because, I think that speaks volumes about the program when you can produce more. If we could continue to increase every year, go on an upward trajectory, we’d be happy with that.”
The 46 student athletes to achieve All-Canadian status represent 25 per cent of the school’s varsity athletes.
Of those 46, four attained a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average.
