REGINA – City officials are preparing to spend more money on choosing city council and school board representatives this fall.

The city is budgeting nearly $870,000 for the 2016 election – that’s 55 per cent more than the $558,000 spent on the 2012 election.

According to the report being reviewed this week by the city’s Executive Committee, the increase will enable the city to upgrade vote counting equipment, implement election management software to streamline the election production process and enhance communication strategies.

The school board is expected to cover 50 per cent of the cost.

The report also suggests a modest increase to campaign spending limits – $64,130 for those running for mayor and up to $10,688 for those running for councilor.

The report will be considered by committee on Wednesday and would likely go to council for a vote at the January 25th city council meeting.
