UPDATE: Extreme cold warning for much of south-central Manitoba

WINNIPEG — Environment Canada has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the city of Winnipeg and a good part of south-central Manitoba.

While the temperature stays around -30 C northwest winds will push wind chill values between -40 and -45 lasting Monday night into Tuesday morning.

It’s a reminder that frost bite can occur very quickly and to always wear appropriate clothing when outside. Synthetic and wood fabrics provide the best insulation.

Here is a map of the areas of the province affected:

Not much sunshine, and below seasonal temperatures will be sticking around as we embark on the second week of January.

It was a cold weekend for most in the province and unfortunately things won’t improve much.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

We are however, in for a bit of a reprieve midweek when we’ll see our daytime temperatures hit more seasonal values come Wednesday with a forecast high of -14 C.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is by Friday night we’ll be cemented back in the deep freeze and in for another “brisk” weekend.

Monday we are seeing a little bit of snow move in from the northwest and along with that this afternoon, gusty winds. That will produce wind chills that make it feel more like -30 C.

Behind the system that will likely only drop a centimetre or two, the arctic ridge builds back up leaving us with cold wind chills once again.

Daytime highs on the weekend will once again sit around -20 C.

It was around this time last January that our weather took a turn for the better, believe it or not.

January 14, 2015 we reached 0 C and from then on the rest of the month we had highs in the minus single digits.

With this being an El Nino year, we can only hope this latest cold snap will be short lived.
