WATCH: It's been a frustrating night for BC Ferries passengers trying to get to and from Powell River. Over the weekend the ferry broke down, and the same thing happened to its replacement. Kristen Robinson explains – Jan 8, 2016

A ferry mechanical problem has some Powell River residents complaining it feels like they are living on Alcatraz.

Sailings of the North Island Princess between Earls Cove and Saltery Bay have been cancelled.

Powell River Acting Mayor Maggie Hathaway says it is causing huge problems for people trying to make medical appointments.

Adding to the isolation, weather has grounded many air flights to and from the community.

Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries says a fuel oil pump issue caused the cancellations.

She says a replacement pump was found in Vancouver but due to weather it could not be flown to Powell River.

Marshall expects the North Island Princess to be in operation tomorrow.

The pump problem comes just days after BC Ferries replaced the Queen of Burnaby on the Powell River-Comox route with a much smaller vessel.

Powell River Sunshine Coast NDP MLA Nicholas Simons says BC Ferries should have never sold the valuable replacement vessel Queen of Chilliwack to a company in Fiji.
