Snow-clearing on sidewalks still a concern for Halifax residents

HALIFAX – Halifax residents were busy clearing snow Wednesday after the Maritime provinces were hit with significant snowfall for the second time in less than a week.

Most areas of the city saw snowfall amounts between 20 and 25 centimetres. The resulting mess had many of the people who were cleaning up remarking on the same thing.

“The streets looks great,” said Daniel Higham. “The sidewalks, though, are halfway up my knees. [It] makes the morning walk a little harder.”

Keeping sidewalks clear of snow is already becoming a hot topic, with Haligonians offering mixed opinions about the job city crews have done so far.

“This year, so far, I think they’ve proven themselves good,” said Linda Carey, who was shovelling snow from her driveway.

Emma Burns said she was a bit disappointed in the snow-clearing efforts.

“We tried to get our kids to daycare this morning, and it’s only about 500 metres away, and none of the sidewalks were plowed, so we had to drive the 500 metres,” she said.

Although the snow hasn’t yet piled quite as high as it did last year, George Hofmann said the city’s approach to clearing sidewalks might not be the best one.

“I feel like it used to be better when people took it on themselves,” he said. “There was less damage and it seemed more efficient.”

Last winter, the barrage of storms left Halifax sidewalks packed with ice, as thousands of complaints were lodged and many blamed the municipality for poor work in clearing the snow.

This winter, however, officials say things will be different.

“We are within our service standards for sure,” said Trevor Harvie, the acting superintendent of winter works for the municipality. “I know [on] a beautiful day like this people kind of want to get out on the streets and the sidewalks. They’ve got to appreciate it does take a little bit of time to get those vehicles and pedestrians moving safely.

Harvie says he will be taking what went right and wrong with the cleanup from the most recent storm to better plan for operations during the next snowfall.
