Traffic control measures in place due to fresh snow on North Shore mountains

It is a sure sign of how much skiers and snowboarders love fresh snow as crews at the North Shore mountains are trying to figure out some traffic control measures over the holiday break.

At Mount Seymour, due to so much congestion, operators are holding cars on Mount Seymour Road until there is space available at the top.

“We’re holding traffic on our road at the moment, just to stop congestion building up in our parking lot,” said Simon Whitehead, marketing and communications manager for Mount Seymour. “We have capacity in the afternoon, but it does get very, very busy for that sweet spot between 10:30 [a.m.] and 2 [p.m.]. ”

“We’re holding traffic down and we’re releasing cars as spots become available in the parking lots at the top of the mountain.”

Some mountain-goers reported that it took a couple of hours to get up the mountain.

But there are no complaints when people reach the top.

This time last year, Mount Seymour wasn’t even open. This year, there is more than two metres of snow in the parking lot alone.

“We’re experiencing a fantastic Christmas,” Whitehead said. “The snow has come, the sunshine’s out. Vancouver has come up to Mount Seymour and they’re having a great time.”

At Cypress and Grouse, there are no specific traffic control measures in place, but traffic is heavy and the parking lots are full. Drivers tell Global News it is taking a few hours to get to the top of the mountains.
