Memorial held for Lenami Godinez-Avila

About 25 people gathered on Saturday at the spot where hang gliding passenger Lenami Godinez-Avila fell to her death a week ago.

Paragliders and hang-gliders assembled to remember the young woman who was celebrating her two-year anniversary with her boyfriend when she tumbled loose from her harness and fell 300 metres.

A prayer was read out to the crowd, and Rob Samplonious, regional director of Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada, HPAC, and Jason Warner, national safety chair of HPAC gave an emotional speech about the situation.

A fellow paraglider also said a few words.

One man played the saxophone, and a cherry tree was planted in memory to the 27-year-old. Cherry trees were Godinez-Avila’s favourite.

She was the passenger of a tandem hang gliding flight last weekend while William (Jon) Orders, a 16-year hang-gliding veteran, had control of the ride.

After Godinez-Avila fell, Orders allegedly swallowed a memory card, and police said now they have possession of it again, they are trying to extract what was on the card.

Orders has now been granted bail.
