Most Americans disagree with Trump’s Muslim ban proposal

More than half of Americans (57 per cent) disagree with White House 2016 contender Donald Trump’s proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the United States, according to a new poll. Overall, 25 per cent agreed.

However, opposition from Republican respondents is not as strong: 42 per cent said they support Trump’s Muslim ban, while 36 per cent said they oppose it.

A full 75 per cent of Democrats oppose the ban.

On Monday Trump called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

Trump’s stance prompted comparisons to Adolf Hitler and suggestions from White House officials that the comments disqualify him from presidency.

The poll released Thursday, conducted for NBC and the Wall Street Journal, also found that 41 per cent of respondents agreed that Trump’s antics are often insulting and take the wrong approach.

Nearly a quarter (24 per cent) said that even if he’s brash and offensive, he’s raising important issues. And 22 per cent said Trump has the right approach.

The poll found that 59 per cent of respondents have a favourable view of Muslims, and 29 per cent negative.

The full NBC/WSJ poll was conducted Dec. 6-9 with 1,000 adults (including nearly 400 reached by cellphone). It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points. Further questions on Trump’s Muslim ban proposal was asked Dec. 8-9 of 495 respondents, which has a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percentage points.
