WINNIPEG – We are still months away from the Manitoba Marathon, but the race is top of mind for many people Tuesday.

Registration for the 38th annual race on June 19 opened at noon and organizers say the response has been steady.

After more than 30 years of running the same course, the marathon is switching gears.

The route for the full, half and relay will be reversed.

“The number one reason for the change is to add a perspective to a really great route,” said Rachel Munday, the executive director of the marathon.

She said the switch will also means runners will experience the shaded part of the route towards the end of the race.

“From a safety perspective and a runner experience perspective, this will be better,” said Munday.

The 10K route will also be completely different.

“We have a beautiful city that we want to highlight,” said Munday, who added she is looking forward to the event’s 40th anniversary in 2018.

She said nothing is off the table when it comes to what could happen to the route for that year.
