WINNIPEG — Even though the game doesn’t kick-off until Sunday, the week leading up to it will be a big one for businesses in the downtown area.

The Grey Cup Festival begins on Wednesday with more than 25 events scheduled over the next four days most of which take place at downtown venues.

“We’re actually bringing in more people into the city to spend money at nearby restaurants and hotels and that’s definitely going to inject dollars into the millions I’m sure,” said Jason Syvixay, managing director of Downtown Biz.

Around 10,000 people are expected to come to Winnipeg for the Grey Cup.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming them, we’re looking forward to the economic impact we’re expecting from having visitors in our community,” said Mayor Brian Bowman.

Several Winnipeg Transit routes have been added for the Grey Cup Festival including one that goes between hotels and event venues downtown and another that takes riders from the airport to hotels and down Pembina Highway.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers say around 35,000 tickets have been sold so far which leaves about 1,000 remaining.

Those tickets left may be scooped up after the two teams that will be playing in the final are set.
