A Swedish journalist is looking for the author of a love letter he believes was written by a refugee, that washed ashore on a beach in Greece.

Erik Wiman, a journalist working on the Greek island of Samos covering the Mediterranean refugee crisis for the Stockholm-based tabloid Aftonbladet, found the love letter in a waterproof bag in late October.

“We know nothing about the letterwriter or the woman he writes about, but it is easy to imagine that the meaning of such lines may be an even greater significance for those who have forced to leave a life behind, to try to start a new one in another part of the world,” Wiman wrote in Aftonbladet.

“Maybe they’re together or life just has forced them to separate.”

The letter written in Arabic was addressed to someone named “Rose” and written by “Hamody.” Wiman wrote that “Hamody” could be a nickname for Mohammed or Ahmad.

Part of the poem translated into English reads:

“My Rose, I promise you, I will love you until the last minute of my life. I promise you, I will not let anything separate us, whatever happens.”

Wiman and Aftonbladet turned to the Internet in the hopes someone from the public can help return the emotional letter to its rightful owner using the hashtag #FindRose.
