Vehicle strikes pedestrian in marked crosswalk

HALIFAX – A woman was treated for minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle, on a day that the municipality has dedicated to greater crosswalk awareness.

Cst. Stacy Opalka said the woman was hit by the vehicle around 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday near the Marriott Hotel on Upper Water Street.

Opalka said the woman, who was in a marked crosswalk, was walking southbound on Upper Water Street when the vehicle tried to turn out of the hotel driveway.

The 58-year-old woman was treated by paramedics on scene. The 42-year-old driver of the vehicle was ticketed.

Wednesday is the second annual Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day. Volunteers, police officers, councillors and residents stood at several busy intersections Wednesday morning to hand out toques and gloves and share the importance of crosswalk safety.
