Severe weather causes flash flooding in south-central Texas

Severe weather is pounding parts of southern central Texas prompting flooding and reports of tornadoes causing damage in small towns near San Antonio.

The U.S. National Weather Service reported more than 15 centimetres of rain is expected to fall in some areas with more expected over the Halloween weekend.

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down northeast of New Braunfels, Texas, near San Antonio, according to local news station KENS5.

The flooding in parts of the state were so bad pumpkins were seen floating on top of rushing waters.

Officials around San Antonio closed more than a dozen roads due to flooding, while Texas State University was forced to close two of its campuses Friday

Remnants of Hurricane Patricia, which was downgraded to a tropical depression, are adding to the rain falling in South and Central Texas, the National Weather Service said in a statement.

Pictures posted to social media showed vehicles stranded on roads and highways across Austin and San Antonio as the flood waters continued to rise.
