Liberal Ken McDonald wins in Avalon, ousting independent incumbent Scott Andrews

The Avalon riding in Newfoundland and Labrador has voted liberal once again, showing their support for the party, as opposed to staying loyal to incumbent Scott Andrews, who ran as an independent.

The new Liberal candidate, Ken McDonald who is also the mayor of Conception Bay South also beat out Conservative Lorraine Barnett, NDP Jeannie Baldwin and Krista Byrne-Puumala of the Green Party.

Scott Andrews, independent incumbent, was running for reelection in the Avalon riding and faced an uphill battle in the this year’s election after being outsted from the Liberal party.

Andrews, a previously elected Liberal representative, was suspended from the party in 2014 over allegations of personal misconduct, and re-offered as an independent candidate for the 2015 federal election.

Riding boundaries have changed in this riding, with much of the northern part of the riding now being part of the new Bonavista-Burin-Trinity riding.

If these boundaries had been in effect in 2011, the Conservatives would have won the seat in Newfoundland.

Within the past 50 years, the Liberals have won all but three elections in the Avalon riding in the past 50 years.
