Bill Morneau has won the riding of Toronto Centre for the Liberal party, upsetting high profile NDP candidate Linda McQuaig.

Morneau, the chairman of Canada’s largest human resources company, was hoping for a win after Bob Rae resigned in 2013.

McQuaig finished second in a 2013 by-election that saw Chrystia Freeland win the seat, but she has since moved to running in the new riding of University-Rosedale.

If the boundaries of the riding existed in 2011, the Liberals would have won with 39.7 per cent over the NDP’s 36.5 per cent — which is why political experts were calling this one of the tightest races to watch in the city.

This riding is about half the size as it was in 2011 and is bordered by Bloor Street in the north and Lakeshore Boulevard in the south.

It includes Regent Park, Moss Park, Cabbagetown-South St. Jamestown and North St. Jamestown.
