Firefighter helmet cam captures scary moment as gas tank explodes

A firefighter’s helmet camera captured a way-too-close call during a fire in Oklahoma Monday.

Limestone Fire Captain Don Boyle, the man who’s point of view we take in the above clip, was responding to a fire at the Tulsa Asphalt quarry operation Monday morning.

Rogers County Emergency Management Director Scott Stokes told the Associated Press the fire began when workers at the quarry were cleaning the fuel tanks.

Soon firefighters were called to the scene of a fire that engulfed seven fuel tanks at the quarry: one with oil, three with diesel fuel, and three with burner fuel.

Boyle tells News on 6 in Oklahoma that he was supervising two firefighters putting water on one of the tanks when a pop-off valve malfunctioned, causing the tank to explode.

Fortunately no one was killed in the resulting explosion. Three firefighters were injured, two of whom were taken to hospital. None of their injuries are considered to be life-threatening.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the cause of the explosion.
