WINNIPEG — The new Travel Manitoba Visitor Information Centre is now open at the Forks.

After approximately two years of renovations the Centre, beside the Forks market, opened to the public Thursday morning.

Several interactive elements designed to help tourists plan trips in Winnipeg and Manitoba are part of the new design. Winnipeg’s Travel Manitoba staff will also now work out of the location.

At Thursday’s ribbon cutting ceremony Premier Greg Selinger talked about the importance of tourism to the provincial economy, “It’s a $1.5 billion a year industry employing up to 24,000 people, it’s an industry that’s growing.”

The Information Centre is one part of a redevelopment plan for the Forks. A $2.5-million makeover of the food court could be revealed by the end of 2015.

Plans are also underway to bring a craft brewery to the Forks and to redevelop a piece of land known as Parcel 40 across the street from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
