WINNIPEG – Agape Table served up hundreds of meals to Winnipeg’s homeless Friday morning.
Raj Phangureh from the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg was one of the volunteers serving up ham, vegetables, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie.
“Holiday’s are a special time and the Kinsmen Club wants to make sure everybody gets to celebrate the holidays,” Phangureh said.
The organization helps provide nutritious food for those in need. The Executive Director Dave Cunnin says the number of people using their services is rising dramatically.
“We’ve seen a 25% growth in the last six months. This is concerning to us because it may be a reflection of decreasing purchasing power within the city,” Cunnin explained.
Agape Table dished out 500 meals from 8:00 -10:30 a.m. Friday at the All Saints’ Church on Colony Street.
Cunnin says while the food is special, it’s the feeling of community and connection their patrons don’t always get.
“They belong here. They feel that they have a face, a name, a purpose. Many of the folks who come here regularly, they help us serve. It’s just amazing. It’s truly a family holiday feast.”
