Saskatoon students pitch in to create historic O Canada recording

SASKATOON – The Canadian flag turned 50 years old this year and to pay tribute, Saskatoon students are pitching in. A national program is attempting to make what may be the largest recording of O Canada – ever.

The “Flag of Canada – Hometown Proud” program is commemorating the flag’s anniversary with a recording session tour. From coast to coast, participating elementary schools are being recorded singing the Canadian national anthem.

“It’s a thrill to see the pride on the faces of so many elementary school students as they become official Canadian recording artists on this nation-wide music project,” said Rob Hanson, executive director of Hometown Music Council.

On Tuesday, Saskatoon students at Bishop Filevich Ukrainian School had the opportunity to partake and celebrate their Canadian heritage.

“Because we are a Ukrainian bilingual school we are the only one of its kind in Saskatchewan … Is an excellent way of feeling a part of that Canadian family,” said principal Shelly Lord.

The tour launched earlier this year and has recorded over 20,000 elementary students.

Recording sessions were also scheduled to take place at École College Park School in Saskatoon and Regina’s Sacred Heart and Argyle Elementary School.

At the conclusion of the tour, approximately 28,000 student voices from every province and territory will be blended into one master recording to be featured in a digital yearbook.

All Canadian elementary schools have until Nov. 1 to share their own videos, audio recordings, photos and stories to be part of the digital yearbook.
