CALGARY – Canadian Nordic Combined athletes are proud to wear the red and white. But now, they’re also representing the blue and white.
After years of struggling for any amount of funding and support, the national team has entered a new partnership with the competition: Finland.
The connection comes from their new head coach, Jouni Kahkonen, who moved to Calgary nine months ago, armed with a four-year plan that included assistance from his native country.
“They really liked the story,” said Kahkonen. “Work together with Canadian people and it’s so nice.”
Now, the four Canadian team members have the support of Finnish sport, media and sponsors.
They just recently returned from a trip to Finland where they had access to Finnish coaching and the latest technology.
It’s all part of a push toward the 2017 FIS Nordic Ski World Championship in Lahti, Finland.
