The public got its first look at the new conceptual design for the new Vancouver Art Gallery today.
The plan for the 310,000-square-foot project at Cambie and Georgia was unveiled this morning.
The goal is to raise $350 million for the project with $150 million coming from the private sector, including a $50-million endowment to sustain the operations of the new gallery.
Seventy-three million dollars has been raised so far.
The gallery’s board of trustees has already committed $23 million for the project.
Kathleen Bartels, Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery, says the gallery is “bursting at the seams,” and the time has come for a new and expanded Vancouver Art Gallery.
Bartels says there will be 86,000 square feet of exhibition space, more than double the current capacity.
The new design has been kept under tight wraps, and there were speculations the design by architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron would be unconventional and was expected to spark debate.

So far, the feedback has not been highly favourable of the new design.
