HALIFAX – A broken water pipe and subsequent flood has forced the relocation of roughly 50 patients, including some who are critically ill, at the Victoria General site of the QEII Hospital.
According to a release from the Nova Scotia Health Authority, a pipe on the fifth floor of the building failed around 8 o’clock last night. The leak has been sealed, but several floors have sustained water damage.
A Belfor restoration company truck was seen outside the hospital late Friday morning.
Patients in affected areas have been placed in other areas of the QEII as an interim measure.
The NSHA says the level of damage is still being assessed, but they anticipate the affected areas of the building will be out of use for a prolonged period.
An emergency operations centre has been established at the hospital. Administrative leaders, physicians and staff, “are working quickly to ensure patients are relocated safely and all necessary services continue.”
All non-emergency surgeries scheduled for the QEII on Friday have been postponed. NSHA says some other outpatient services will be affected.
