Bland Okotoks tourism slogan not what it seems

CALGARY – A photo showing what appeared to be an underwhelming tourism slogan for the town of Okotoks that went viral on Wednesday wasn’t quite what it seemed.

The picture was of an advertisement for the southern Alberta town spotted on the side of a Calgary CTrain, and read “there are a number of things to do in Okotoks.”

The seemingly bland slogan was mocked by Twitter and Facebook users who began sharing the picture.

However, officials with the Town of Okotoks said the photo didn’t offer a complete picture of their advertising campaign.

The actual campaign slogan is “let your summer unfold in Okotoks,” accompanied with a photo of a young woman holding a paper fortune teller. “There are a number of things to do in Okotoks,” is just the tagline, and is connected to a free foldable fortune teller which was available in the Okotoks Visitor and Activities Guide.

“The paper/origami fortune teller was part of a fun, playful way that we could engage our young population,” said Okotoks Economic Development Manager Shane Olson. “Behind each flap there are fun things to do in Okotoks.”

Ultimately, Olson said the photo got people talking, which is what’s important.

“We’re having a conversation about Okotoks that we might not have had with an ‘exciting’ tagline.”
