WINNIPEG — Tears were shed as more than 50 people hugged and gathered to remember Geraldine Beardy who died over a can of meat in 2009.

A memorial was held outside the Health Sciences Centre Friday afternoon, six years after Beardy passed away.

Police said the 29-year-old died five days after being hit by a shopkeeper at Okay Groceries on Sherbrook street after she took the can.

The shopkeeper was charged with manslaughter in connection to the death of Beardy in September 2009.

“Even though she had nothing in terms of material things, one of the things she loved to do is help other people who had nothing as well,” the memorial organizer Leslie Spillett said.

Beardy’s family handed out bannock to everyone in memory of her after sharing their messages. Friends will also host a memorial feast in Garden Hill on Saturday.

“When we see someone who may  be hungry or may be houseless… that we open up our hearts and treat people like human beings,” Spillett said.
