TORONTO — Police are reminding parents not to get too excited about back-to-school season after a Brampton driver  sped through a parking lot to beat traffic and impaled his car on a parking pole.

Peel Regional Police Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick said the unnamed driver was in a hurry to get his kids to school and attempted to bypass the intersection of Ray Lawson Boulevard and McLaughlin Road by speeding through a strip mall parking lot. She wouldn’t identify the driver.

“Obviously he did not see the two four-and-a-half foot tall yellow posts, drove, managed to get over the first one but the vehicle got impaled on the second one and got stranded atop,” she said.

“Nobody was injured, the kids were ok, but again those two metal poles were at least four feet tall they’re painted bright yellow and the owner of the business put them there so that people wouldn’t park.”

The poles were put in place to prevent drivers from blocking accessibility access to the businesses at the mall.

“They’re not new, they’ve been there for quite a while and it’s obvious that I couldn’t estimate how much speed was involved in there but there had to be some speed involved for him to get over the first one and get hung up on the second one,” Fitzpatrick said.

“It’s just a reminder to people to focus, focus, focus. Don’t get caught up. It’s much, much better that the kids either are a couple of minutes late for school, but they need to be safe.”

Fitzpatrick said the driver ended up being late in the end anyways and had to call another family member to pick up the kids to get them to school.

“He was held up there and he’s going to have some explaining to do to his insurance company and it’s not worth the few seconds that it would save you,” she said.

“Luckily, [we’re] very happy nobody was injured. But again we just want to stress the point that it is not worth it to be in a rush, lose your focus or your concentration and end up with at best damage to your vehicle, at worst injuries to your or your children or somebody else.”

Fitzpatrick said that the investigating officer had not yet laid charges but she expected they will be pending.
