Fish and chip shop owner wants Kelowna tradition to continue

KELOWNA – A Kelowna institution is up for sale, but the owner of Shady Rest British Fish & Chip Shop doesn’t want to sell it to just anyone. Mel Pearson has been working at the restaurant on Sutherland Avenue since 1967 when his parents bought the business. After over 45 years at the shop, he is ready to sell but isn’t ready to see the restaurant close.

Pearson would like to see his business taken over by an individual, or better yet a family, who wants to keep operating the shop.

“[In] Kelowna everything I grew up with as a kid is all gone now and I’d just like to keep something that’s been around a long time,” says Pearson.

He says he sees a lot of familiar faces all around Kelowna thanks to his business.

The long time restaurateur believes it is a secret batter recipe that keeps his loyal customers returning and he’s offering to include that recipe in the sale.

The business and the 0.05 acres of land it sits on are both up for sale and are listed for $289,000.
