WINNIPEG — In a cramped, over-crowded room in a Winnipeg hotel, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau addressed a room of supporters Wednesday in his quest to become prime minister.

It’s his first visit to the city since a federal election was called for Oct. 19.

Trudeau said in seven out of 10 families in Canada, both parents work. That’s doubled from 40 years ago.

“We’ll make sure every federally regulated worker can get more flexible work conditions … like working from home or change their hours,” Trudeau said.

It would be a formal process under which employees could request a shift change and employers would be required to reply in writing. For example, if a parent has to pick up a child from daycare earlier on a Friday, they could ask to work longer on Monday or another day.

“As a father of three young kids, I know how important it is to be there for them to grow up,” said Trudeau.

Before the event began, many supporters in the overflowing room at the Holiday Inn Winnipeg South on Pembina Highway were upset at the small space. Some were frustrated that they couldn’t get into the room.

“This might be my first and last rally,” said one supporter.
