CAPE JOURIMAIN, N.B. – A 12-year-old New Brunswick girl attempting to set a Guinness World Record for the youngest person to swim across the Northumberland Strait completed her swim Sunday.
Brooklyn Douthwright, of Riverview, N.B., completed the 15-kilometre swim from Cape Jourimain, N.B., to Borden-Carleton, P.E.I., in just over four hours.
She was one of about 50 people take part in The Big Swim fundraiser for the Brigadoon Village facility in Nova Scotia. The camp helps children living with a chronic illness, chronic condition or special needs.
Earlier in the day, Douthwright said she expected the hardest part of the race would be to stay focused.
“Anything to not get bored I guess that’s one of my main concerns,” she said.
The oldest person to participate in the swim also took part on Sunday.
Ron Allen, 70, said he wanted to prove to himself he could do it.
“I feel good at 70 years old,”Allen said, noting he had been training for weeks leading up to the event. “My big concern today is to make sure I’m hydrated and just to watch for signals that there maybe something going on in regards to the heat.”
The swimmers raised about $150,000 for Brigadoon Village.
Donations are being accepted until September.
A spokesman for the event says Douthwright’s parents will submit an application to Guinness World Records to set the record.
