SASKATOON – A Saskatoon police officer and a police service dog were injured and three people are facing charges following a chase on Sunday morning. Police were first alerted to a vehicle being driven erratically in the 1500-block of 2nd Avenue North just before 4 a.m.

A sergeant attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver took off at a high rate of speed. The vehicle collided with another vehicle a short time later at the intersection of 19th Street West and Avenue C South.

Two people fled on foot.

A canine unit followed one of the suspects to a backyard in the 600-block of Avenue G South.

The man refused commands to stop where he was witnessed causing injury to the police dog and allegedly encouraging three dogs to attack the canine officer and police dog.

Police say the canine unit was able to escape the yard after being bitten several times.

The police service dog was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.

The 54-year-old man was eventually arrested after a patrol unit arrived. He sustained injuries that police say are consistent with a dog bite.

He is facing charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and assault.

A second man was arrested a few hours later trying to break into a vehicle in the 600-block of 6th Street East. He was determined to be the driver of the vehicle involved in the chase.

The 19-year-old man is facing charges of evading police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of mischief under $5,000, possession of stolen property, attempted theft of a motor vehicle and five counts of breach of an undertaking.

A 15-year-old girl, who police said left the vehicle at Idylwyld Drive and 33rd Street, is facing obstruction and three breach of undertaking charges.
