US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs sings Chumbawamba, ‘Uptown Funk’ at speaking appearance

The United States’ highest-ranking military man showed a softer side in front of high school students on Thursday.

US Army General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his wife Deanie, conducted what was billed as a fireside chat at the Military Child Education Coalition 17th National Training Seminar in Washington, DC.

In answering a question about overcoming failure, Dempsey referenced the band Chumbawamba, best known for the song “Tubthumping,” which contains the lyric, “I get knocked out, but I get up again.”

In response to a ribbing from his wife, Dempsey referenced a more recent song, “Uptown Funk,” by Mark Ronson, featuring Bruno Mars.

Dempsey then started singing the song, to laughter and applause.

Dempsey later led the students in singing an Irish ditty called “The Unicorn Song.”
