Montreal driver dies after hitting 8 vehicles in a downtown crash up

MONTREAL – An autopsy is to be conducted on the body of a 50-year-old man who died late Wednesday.

The man died after the vehicle he’d been driving slammed into a total of eight vehicles along St. Jacques St. W. downtown, Constable Mélanie Martineau of Montreal police confirmed early Thursday.

The man’s car hit three vehicles while he was driving eastbound along St. Jacques St. near Lucien L’Allier St., Martineau said.

With him still at the wheel, it then ran into another five vehicles near Mountain St., she added.

One person in one of the vehicles hit received minor injuries, Martineau said.

Police were called to the scene about 9 p.m., she added.

The Montreal Canadiens were playing the Boston Bruins nearby at the Bell Centre.

The man was declared dead at 11:20 p.m.

“We have not eliminated any hypothesis,” Martineau said.

“Was it a mechanical problem? Is there another reason? At this point, we don’t know.”

“A full range” of toxicology tests will be carried out on the body to determine whether – and, if so, how – the man was impaired, she said.

“Material damages were considerable,” Martineau said.

She said she was not in a position to provide the type of vehicle or its model year.
