DELISLE, Sask. – A Saskatchewan fire department has a new tool to use when fighting blazes. On Saturday, a demonstration was held in Delisle to see the technology in action.

Often referred to as the “fire extinguisher grenade,” the DSPA-5 (Dry Sprinkler Powder Aerosol) can be used to suppress or slow a blaze inside a building until further resources arrive.

Lakeland Fire & Safety Supply, of St. Paul, Alta., distributes the product.

“This way, a chief or an officer or anyone can take this DSPA, go to the house, throw it in as the truck arrives,” said Ken Hamaliuk, a Lakeland Fire & Safety Supply representative.

“Meanwhile, the temperature of the house fire drops drastically from 900 to 300 degrees – that’s average, and makes it a lot safer for the firefighters to enter.”

Hamaliuk says the new tool will help speed up response times and decrease property loss.

“It’s a chemical reaction, the ring that burns around the outside lets out the chemical which is non-toxic so if there’s animals in the house or people in the house still, it won’t hurt them.”

The fire department covers Delisle, Vanscoy, Pike Lake and two rural municipalities near Saskatoon.
