Resident upset with illegal dump in Lake Echo, N.S.

WATCH: One Halifax-area man says he’s been trying to get the municipality to clean up a dump site that popped up near his Lake Echo home months ago, but so far, he says the problem is getting worse. Natasha Pace reports.

HALIFAX – Maurice Mury walks the same stretch of road in Lake Echo, N.S. nearly every day, but lately, what he’s been seeing has him up in arms: garbage dumped illegally just off Highway 7.

Mury started noticing the garbage building up nearly two years ago. He’s notified the city multiple times, but nothing has been done.

Meanwhile, another illegal dump site has popped up nearby — containing everything from kitty litter to animal remains.

“All terrain vehicle tires don’t get put there by themselves. Black and green garbage bags don’t get put there by themselves. Fish bones, where are you going to find fish on the side of the road that you can easily catch?” Mury said.

The area’s councillor is aware of the sites. David Hendsbee says illegal dumping is becoming more common.

“This is a problem area between Lake Echo and Porters Lake where people have been constantly dumping with very little supervision,” he said. “It’s been problematic”

The MLA for the Lake Echo area says illegal dumping is a senseless act, one that can have serious consequences.

“There are serious fines if you’re caught doing it. A lot of the stuff that’s dumped there, the garbage man will take it. Leave it out for the garbage man, they will take it. There’s no charge,” said Keith Colwell.

Despite government officials being aware of the illegal dump, there is still no date in place to clean it up.

“When you have a politician — whether he’s municipal, provincial or federal — and they’ve been in there, they come to your door for your support at election time and you don’t hear from them and they’re not doing what they’re supposed to do … it’s time a fresh face is put in. We need a doer, not a talker,” Mury said.
