CALGARY – Two years after the worst natural disaster in Alberta history, flood victims are demanding the provincial government move on major flood mitigation projects.

The Calgary River Communities Action Group (CRCAG) is launching a postcard campaign directed at Premier Rachel Notley and the NDP government demanding they speed up the mitigation process to prevent future disasters.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It will happen,” said CRCAG’s co-president Tony Morris. “I can’t tell you when, I can’t tell you how badly, it could be much worse than we experienced.”

Two of the projects are the proposed Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir Project with an estimated cost of $260 million and the McLean Creek Dam pegged at about $340 million.

The group is asking Premier Notley to prioritize flood mitigation work currently underway after two years of analysis and study by engineers, hydrologists and other experts. They’re demanding a meeting as soon as possible with the premier, and both the municipal affairs and environment ministers.
