Eco-friendly Lethbridge?

It seems when it comes to the environment, most Lethbridge residents feel they are eco-conscious.

However, when it comes to the city as a whole, some residents feel it could be greener.

“I think Lethbridge has a little bit of a ways to go,” said one person.

“Compared to other cities, I think we’re a little behind,” added another.

University of Lethbridge professor James Byrne agrees Lethbridge could be doing more.

“Are we really making it friendly and opportune for us to develop green things?” he said. “Are we looking for green renewable energy? So far, there hasn’t been a lot of effort in that area by the city of Lethbridge or even by the community in southern Alberta.”

He noted the current Council is more open to environmental initiatives compared to previous administrations, but believes indecision on things like curbside recycling doesn’t reflect well on the city.

“We have to recognize that going green, going renewable, saving the environment isn’t a onerous cost.  In fact, it’s a great benefit.”

Mayor Chris Spearman doesn’t dispute Council hasn’t dug deep enough. “We recognize that we are doing somethings well, and there is room for improvement,” he explained.

“We need broader participation that might take time and we need to deliver quality programs that people have confidence in.”

It seems no matter who you ask, it’s unanimous – Lethbridge needs to become more eco-friendly sooner rather than later.
