Etna, located on the island of Sicily, is the country’s most active volcano. However, it rarely poses a danger to nearby residents.
The increased activity began on May 13 and strengthened before weakening somewhat on Friday.
However, the eruption has affected some flights over mainland Italy in Catania.
There are records dating back 2,000 years chronicling the volcano’s nearly continuous activity.
