Rain dominates forecast heading into long weekend

WINNIPEG – The Victoria Day long weekend in Manitoba signals the start of the camping season for many. Just tell that to Mother Nature, who is not being overly accommodating. Rain, and lots of it, will fall through Thursday and then again over the weekend.

We will see anywhere from 10 to 20 millimetres of rain in Winnipeg, and through much of the Red River Valley. We won’t catch a break with the weather until Friday, when skies will clear and we’ll see our temperatures climb into the high teens. This time of year our normal daytime high is 19 C, which we haven’t been close to since May 6 when the high hit 22 C.

Saturday and Sunday will be cloudy, with showers off and on throughout the day, but Sunday will be downright nasty with high winds to go along with periods of rain.

Environment Canada is forecasting an additional 10-20 mm of rain for Winnipeg over the weekend, while the Whiteshell could see 25-30 mm.

There is hope for Monday, with sunshine in the forecast but our temperatures are looking to be well below seasonal with a high of 8 C. We can keep our fingers crossed the forecast may warm up a bit more by Victoria Day, but if you are headed out camping in southeastern Manitoba – you better pack your rain gear.
