Students learn to be “dog smart”

REGINA – Children and dogs can be amazing friends, but it’s important that kids know how to interact with the animals.

The Regina Humane Society was teaching grade three students from St. Jerome school the importance of safety around dogs.

It’s a part of the “Be Dog Smart” initiative aimed at educating children under the age of 12 how to behave safely around dogs.

The children played games and got a chance to interact with one of the dogs from the humane society to show off what they learned.

In 2014, the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region dealt with over 500 reported animal bites, with dogs being responsible for 70 per cent of those.

Bill Thorn, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Regina Humane Society, sees the importance in teaching these skills at a young age.

“For their own safety, no one wants to see a child, or anyone get bit for that matter,” said Thorn. “It can happen so we want to make sure people have as much knowledge as they can get going in.”

The humane society has a ton of advice and downloadable pamphlets available online for anyone who might feel a little uncomfortable around a four-legged friend.
