Global News nominated for dozens of national RTDNA awards

Global News has been nominated for 12 national RTDNA awards, including one nomination in every digital category.

Globalnews.ca was nominated for five different awards, including Death Behind Bars, an interactive series on life and death in Canadian prisons, which was nominated for the Dan McArthur Award. Coverage of the shooting in Moncton that left three RCMP officers dead was nominated for the Charlie Edwards Award for spot news, the sex offender map that Ontario didn’t want you to see was nominated for The Canadian Press Data Storytelling Award, and the Globalnews.ca website was nominated for the Digital Media Award.

The Globalnews.ca series, Invisible Woundswas also named a finalist for the Ron Laidlaw Award in best continuing coverage. The in-depth series profiled several current and former members of the Canadian Forces to paint a picture of the military’s struggle with PTSD among its members. The series has been nominated for three other awards including a regional RTDNA award, the Canadian Journalism Foundation’s Excellence in Journalism award, and the Canadian Association of Journalists Online Media award.

Global News’ investigative program 16×9 picked up four nominations for stories on the Jewish sect Lev Tahor, aging LGBT people in Canada, and The Unspooling Mind, a story on dementia patients in Canada. Director of Photography Kirk Neff was also nominated for creative use of video in The Day the Wave Came.

Global National was also nominated for three awards, two of which focused on the shooting in Ottawa which killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo as he stood guard at the National War Memorial. The national news program is also nominated for the Bert Cannings Award for best newscast.
