TORONTO – A collection of stories written by Globalnews.ca journalists has been named as finalists for the Canadian Journalism Foundation’s Excellence in Journalism Award.

The Globalnews.ca entry delves into the embattled world of Canada’s first responders, diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder as they readjust to life either after the military, or try to continue working as paramedics, police officers, and firefighters struggling with their diagnosis.

The series, Invisible Wounds, launched April 15, 2014, featuring in-depth profiles with five veterans or soldiers, all facing their own struggle with PTSD. Since the series was published, Global News has received dozens, if not hundreds, of emails, tweets and comments from people.

The Invisible Wounds series was followed by a series of stories profiling the mental health issues that first responders deal with on a daily basis. The story, 13 first responders, 13 suicides, 10 weeks, looked at a growing number of suicides among Canada’s first responder community and the lack of significant, unified help they receive.

“This year’s entries reflected the range of extraordinary work done by news organizations on social, political, economic and cultural issues,” says Christopher Waddell, an associate professor with the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University and chair of the jury.

The award is handed out annually to a Canadian organization that “embodies exemplary journalism with a resulting impact on the community it serves,” according to the CJF website.

Global News is nominated in the large media organization (over 50 employees) category.

The awards will be handed out during the 18th annual CJF Awards ceremony, hosted by Peter Mansbridge, in June.
