Ex-NHLer holds presser in Toronto to explain on-ice attack in Sweden

TORONTO – Former NHLer Andre Deveaux has scheduled a news conference in Toronto on Friday to explain why he viciously slashed a player in the back of the legs prior to a game in Sweden two months ago.

Prosecutors in Sweden are considering charges against the Welland, Ont. native following the violent on-ice incident.

Video recorded appears to show the 31-year-old, who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, skating towards Vasteras captain Per Helmersson and brutally slash him across the back of the legs before hitting him in the head.

An email sent to media Thursday said Deveaux “will be providing surprising new video evidence of injuries that were flagrantly ignored by Swedish hockey league officials.”

He had played 20 games for the Rogle BK team in the second-tier Swedish league during the 2014-15 season and was quickly released by the club after the incident.

Deveaux was a sixth round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2002 NHL Draft before making his NHL debut in 2008 with the Maple Leafs.
