TORONTO – The City of Toronto is encouraging residents to eat local and in-season, by sharing recipes in a new online collection.

The initiative, called The Local Dish, invites members of the community to share their favourite recipes in order to build what the city hopes will become Toronto’s largest online recipe collection.

Users can share their recipes through a board on Pinterest, a photo-sharing social media network.

Project organizers said they hope The Local Dish initiative will be a fun way for residents to share recipes — but it’s also to help grow the local food movement in Toronto.

“In addition to being fresh, nutritious and close to home, local food supports local jobs and local farmers, and reduces the greenhouse gas emissions associated with food travel. It’s a win for the city on many levels,” said Michelle Berardinetti, city councillor for Ward 35.

Beyond eating local, the project will showcase seasonal produce grown in Ontario.

Each month, a different seasonal fruit or vegetable will be featured as the “all-star” pick for the month. May’s “all-star” is fresh asparagus.

Local chefs and restaurants are also getting in on the action by contributing their favourite recipes to the collection. Chef Fabrio Bondi, from Local Kitchen & Wine Bar, shared his recipe for sauteed asparagus with guanciale.
