Vehicle hits moose near downtown Kelowna

KELOWNA – A highly unusual motor vehicle incident temporarily closed part of Highway 97 through Kelowna Friday morning.

Just after 4:00 a.m. a pickup truck struck a moose between Burtch Road and Gordon Drive.

A passenger in the truck was injured and taken to hospital.

The moose was badly hurt and RCMP put the animal down with gunshots.

The incident forced the closure of some of the westbound lanes while a crane was brought in to remove the carcass.

The animal reportedly weighed about 350 kilograms.
