Canada to provide counter-terrorism training to Jordan

Canada will provide counter-terrorism training to Jordan as part of an agreement to help the Middle Eastern country, the federal government announced Wednesday.

The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon after Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with Jordanian King Abdullah II.

Canada will also assist in the safe transport of refugees from the border to registration centres. Jordan has taken in thousands of refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria.

The Canadian government also announced it would provide “security and other essential services” near the camps, as well as “mitigate chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats.”

“Canada is proud to stand alongside Jordan and our other Coalition allies in the fight against ISIS, and to work together at mitigating the suffering this barbaric terrorist group is causing innocent civilians in the region,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement Wednesday.

The security initiatives will cost approximately $25 million, according to a government release.
