Toronto ‘bundling’ construction projects to minimize congestion

WATCH ABOVE: The city is investing more than $550 million to maintain and improve roads and infrastructure in 2015. Mark McAllister reports.

TORONTO – Toronto officials say the bundling of key infrastructure projects around the city this year will help ease traffic congestion during the busy construction season.

“Our infrastructure is aging and we need to perform this work so that we can continue to maintain and upgrade critical services for our residents,” said chair of the city’s public works committee Jaye Robinson.

Robinson cited the Allen Road closure two weeks ago as an example of how the movement of the Metrolinx boring machines also permitted city workers to conduct its annual spring maintenance.

The city’s closure of the Gardiner Expressway this upcoming weekend is the latest construction project that will disrupt the flow of traffic in the city for the next couple of months.

The intersection of College St. and Spadina Ave. reopened to traffic on Monday after a three-week closure for streetcar track repairs.

The city said it is investing more than $550-million to maintain and improve roads, expressways and bridges, as well as sewers and watermains.

It’s estimated the city will complete over 120 kilometres of road resurfacing work and 146 kilometres of sewer and watermain work this year.

The City of Toronto does provide an interactive map called T.O. INview online for real-time information on infrastructure work being done throughout the city.

All the work is being escalated in advance of the summer’s Pan Am Games and expected to continue throughout the summer months.
