HALIFAX – A Halifax man is sharing pictures of the scene after a powerful and deadly earthquake rocked Kathmandu, Nepal.

More than 2,500 people are dead and many others are missing after the 7.8 magnitude quake hit the region Saturday.

Mitchell Pineo and four other Haligonians were in Kathmandu when the earthquake struck. Pineo and his friend JR Loeb are both DJs and were in the middle of a three-day tour in Nepal. All are safe and unhurt.

Pineo said the group set up a make shift camp to sleep and spend the night. He said that there have been multiple tremors since the earthquake, which has put people on edge and created waves of paranoia.

Members of the Halifax Nepalese community gathered on Spring Garden Road Sunday afternoon to fundraise for loved ones back home.

Karma Gurung grew up in Kathmandu Valley and has been living in Halifax for four years.

She has been talking to relatives back home but wanted to do something tangible to help.

“I was looking at Facebook and I saw my cousin’s status that said they have [been having] aftershocks. They’re in shock,” she said.
“I don’t know what to do so I [decided] to go to Spring Garden and ask for donations. That’s the only thing I can do.”

Gurung said she has spoken to some relatives who have described a hectic scene.

“There’s no electricity now. A lot of people are sleeping outside. Some are sleeping on the road.”

“It would be really nice if everyone can help and make [people] aware of what is going on in Nepal because we need help right now,” she said.
